At St Mary’s Catholic Voluntary Academy, Relationships, Sex and Health Education forms an important part of our commitment to supporting the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of every child. Rooted in the teachings of the Catholic Church, our RSHE curriculum helps children understand their God-given dignity and value, develop healthy relationships and make informed, responsible choices as they grow.

We recognise that parents and carers are the first educators of their children. We therefore see RSHE as a partnership between home and school, working together to support children’s personal, social, emotional and spiritual development.

Relationships and Health Education became statutory for all primary schools in England in 2020, and there has been new Department for Education guidance shared in September 2026. As a Catholic school, we remain committed to ensuring that our provision fulfils statutory requirements whilst remaining firmly rooted in the teachings and values of the Catholic Church.

Currently, RSHE is taught through a combination of the Journey in Love and 1Decision programmes, alongside our wider PSHE, Science and Religious Education curriculum. Through this learning, children develop an understanding of healthy relationships, emotional wellbeing, personal safety, physical health, family life and the importance of treating themselves and others with dignity and respect.

RSHE from 2026-2027

The Diocese of Nottingham has directed schools to transition to Life to the Full by Ten:Ten Resources. During the 2026-2027 academic year, we are undertaking a period of consultation with parents and carers regarding this change.
