PE and Sports Premium

Physical Education (PE), Sport and Fitness Development

We are delighted to share with you our overview for the development of Physical Education, Sport and Fitness in our school.

Following the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Government aimed to secure a significant and lasting legacy; developing an enjoyment of sport and physical activity, and promoting a healthy lifestyle in children from an early age, were identified as vital aspects.  To support this, the Prime Minister provided significant additional funding for primary schools.

What is PE and Sports Premium funding?

PE and Sports Funding in the UK refers to financial support provided to schools to improve physical education (PE), sport, and physical activity opportunities for children. This funding is primarily aimed at primary schools and comes from the government to enhance PE provision and encourage healthy, active lifestyles.

Primary PE and Sport Premium

The Primary PE and Sport Premium is a specific government grant given to primary schools in England to improve the quality of PE and sport. It was introduced in 2013 and continues to be a key part of school funding. The money is allocated based on the number of pupils in Years 1-6, with most schools receiving £16,000 per year plus £10 per pupil.

Schools can use the funding to:

  • Hire qualified sports coaches to work with teachers.
  • Improve PE equipment and facilities.
  • Provide more extracurricular sports clubs.
  • Offer swimming lessons and other physical activities.
  • Train teachers to improve the quality of PE lessons.
  • Encourage active play during break times.

We must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of the PE, physical activity and sport we provide. This includes any carried forward funding.

This means that we will use the PE and sport premium to:

  • develop or add to the PE, physical activity and sport that we provide
  • build capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now are sustainable and will benefit students joining the school in future years
